Julie Orringer impressive accomplishment to lead the events and relationships between two Jewish families in Hungary during the war years is all more remarkable that a first novel. In 600 pages of details about life, hope and the fight is clearly a book that has been brewing for some time. It was worth it.
The Invisible Bridge accomplished the task with a large piece of art - illuminate the life of the observer, as it unfolds in their own words.
The streets of Hungary and Paris and geographical landscapes and architecture in the book provide a structure and a texture that acts as a framework for story characters complexes that evoke interest and empathy - even some of the least attractive.
Even the inevitable decline catastrophic events, the invisible bridge maintains a calm detachment that allows the player to stay with the players, without departing from the horror.
The story itself is fascinating with endless little surprises wrapped gifts waiting game as along the road. Even the love story heart of the book unfolds as pass the parcel, like layers of secrets are revealed. In fact, secrecy is another theme of the novel, the working relationship and family, etc..
The main characters are strong, resilient and talented, and loving and generous. They have a sense of belonging and places.
If the book has a weakness that would be the final relatively short and tidy. Orringer can leave the door open to a new episode of the family saga. Somehow I think not. That would be below.
This is a book that raises human and warm, with small, intimate details of daily life and progress of the war omen. It should find its place in triples in price, and most likely win.
