I wonder how many people today have had the opportunity to attend an old school song. I would say that most people under 50 have never heard of. Even then, would probably have grown up in the Bible Belt and was part of the community church.
I the privilege to attend a series of singing schools when I was growing up. The last place my church, I would say around 1980. Later, in 2003 I had the opportunity to attend a church where I was teaching school. But they still exist are rare and very difficult to find someone who can teach one more. The techniques taught in an old school of singing, for the most part lost the dominant church go-er.
Singing schools I attended were sponsored by Stamps Baxter, the editor Chief of the Southern Gospel Choir SATB a musical note. For perhaps 70 to 80 years, the publisher released a new song book each year and book Marketing churches, country churches, especially the small town. The church acquired a set of codes of the choir members and, in turn, a representative Stamps-Baxter School planned a week of singing from the church. The school was held in the afternoon, Monday through Friday, as a service renaissance occurred. The choir, musicians, singers and church members interested attended. At school, the first representative to teach basics of reading music as a note. Then he chose six or eight songs, and use new skills in reading music, taught the choir songs. Learned to read at first glance, the songs, then sing a capella, then add the music of piano, organ, or guitar.
