Erin has taught English at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California. Erin students were adolescents at risk for many embedded problems in urban areas most cities. These magazines were published in the book "The Freedom Writers Diary" and has been a bestseller for ten years. The proceeds of this book have been used to provide scholarships their students. He created a foundation to continue teaching methods by teachers Erin.
Educators were Erin Gruwell learning methods through a five-day camp called Freedom Writers Institute. In summer 2008, 150 teachers have begun the work of writing their stories in diary form. In the month of August. 2009 the book "Teaching for Hope" was published.
