There is an urgent need for effective evangelization in our jails and prisons today, however, most of the techniques used by Christians in question are simply ineffective. This observation is based on personal experience gained while serving a segment of time in the last five decades. My intention not to discredit or discourage the ongoing efforts of the ministry, but simply to propose more effective techniques of the department.
Most of the efforts the department seems to focus on the approach to literature or visit. Both methods can be effective if performed correctly. Unfortunately, most departments now employ the technique of active hunting, in an attempt to reach the masses while unprocessed should be using the shotgun approach and focus individual goals.
Each year tons of Christian literature Flood prison systems across the country. Too many "prison ministries" to emphasize the number of non-believers can claim their ministry for the Lord and not focusing on the education of inmates who have a profession of faith. A good education, Christian prisoner is the most powerful tool available to convert the general population, but their education is often ignored. A ministry beyond prison walls can not compete with a Christian prisoner who can take action and rhetoric.
People who donate money may revolutionize contemporary efforts prison ministry, just ask a few questions before opening their wallets. Ask to inspect materials the department provides to inmates. The Prison Service is bound by the rules and regulations that restrict the content of these programs and assistance is not limited only to Christian prisoners. Therefore, the preaching of the Gospel can not imply that Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation and the group of visitors are subject to disruption of the disbelievers who are just coming for fun. Visitors and music groups, who are not familiar with the harshness of the prison environment can be easily offended by what this form of ministry is best left to organizations that specialize in the field.
For the local church, efforts much more effective ministry is to visit their county jails. This is a mission field important and very effective when it comes to offenders first time. In this local level of incarceration begins to realize he (or she) is at a crossroads where the company requires a change in behavior. This is an opportunity to present the message of the Gospel and offer alternative lifestyle based on Bible. resistance management in this mission effort is minimal and is a Bible college diploma is not required.
