Translated literally, Khalsa means "pure" and is the target of all Sikhs to become Khalsa. Khalsa officially becomes when he or she has been baptized Sikh, and agreed to abide by the Code of Sikh Conduct and Conventions and the use of prescribed physical articles of faith. This ceremony takes place when a mature person is in the presence the Guru Granth Sahib and five other Khalsa Sikhs. Khalsa members can be easily distinguished by certain articles of clothing which are used as symbols of their faith. They are known as the five K.
· Kesh or long-term, long hair is a symbol of spirituality. It reminds the person to behave like gurus. (The members are male a turban on her hair.)
· Kirpan, or ceremonial sword, a symbol of dignity. This is not considered a weapon, a like the cross is used by Christians as a symbol of faith, not an instrument of torture.
· Kangha, or comb, is a symbol of hygiene and discipline.
Kara ° or steel bracelet is a symbol of moderation in action and a constant reminder of your devotion to God.
· Kachhi, or drawers, which symbolize the self-control and chastity.
Sikhism is a religion to fifth in the world. He began as a progressive religion which rejected all distinctions of caste, creed, race or sex. Recognized the full equality of women at a time when women were considered as property or entertainment of men, when female infanticide and widow burning was common and even encouraged.
